Perfect Anna Neagle vehicle, 20 March 2007
10/10

Director Herbert Wilcox had as his interest exhibiting the personal qualities of his star and eventual wife, who was extremely popular in England but is now completely ignored in the US. And she is the one actress who is incapable of making a bad movie, such is her power. But there is more than one person driving this train. Very well cast and beautifully filmed, albeit on poor quality film. I never thought I could actually find Zasu Pitts intriguing. Anthony Collins' score is breathtaking. He interprets the drama perfectly, and I cannot adequately describe the way his music supports the long shots of almost total darkness. In short, this film has many moments that are analyzable but perhaps not reviewable. I can imagine that it is probably too subtle for modern audiences, but I hope not. I also imagine that there are even better Anna Neagle movies that are not available on DVD, and which I have not seen. It is this consideration that keeps me from being overzealous in my praise of this particular one.
