- After the killing of her husband by friendly fire during a police raid, Dr. Carole Nelson tries to find gangster Joe Gurney to clear her name with the medical board.
- Niles and Carole Nelson are married doctors who save one of gang lord Gurney's men. Gurney exploits them, then kills Niles leaving Carole to take the fall. - Niles Nelson is a gifted young doctor but makes a mistake when he treats a wounded member of mobster Joe Gurney's mob. When Nelson regrets his actions and tries to withdraw from the arrangement with Gurney, he's killed. Worried about his image, the egotistical Gurney kidnaps a penniless writer Bill Stephens to write his version of his memoirs. Nelson's widow, also a doctor, realizes that Gurney will kill Stephens after the 'autobiography' is finished, and she decides to take action that will save them both.—duke1029@aol.com

When Joe Gurney (Humphrey Bogart), a gangster with a Napoleonic complex, admires their skill in operating on and saving the life of a henchman, Gurney forces Nelson, who has a gambling problem and needs the money, into working for his gang, until Nelson is killed in a police raid.
