Forrest Gump, Bambi, Stand And Deliver Among 2011 National Film Registry List

“My momma always said, .Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get..” That line was immortalized by Tom Hanks in the award-winning movie “Forest Gump” in 1994. Librarian of Congress James H. Billington today selected that film and 24 others to be preserved as cultural, artistic and historical treasures in the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress.

Spanning the period 1912-1994, the films named to the registry include Hollywood classics, documentaries, animation, home movies, avant-garde shorts and experimental motion pictures. Representing the rich creative and cultural diversity of the American cinematic experience, the selections range from Walt Disney.s timeless classic “Bambi” and Billy Wilder.s “The Lost Weekend,” a landmark film about the devastating effects of alcoholism, to a real-life drama between a U.S. president and a governor over the desegregation of the University of Alabama. The selections also »

Latest National Film Registry Entries Include ‘Forrest Gump,’ ‘Bambi,’ and ‘El Mariachi’

28 December 2011 6:30 AM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

I’m never one to put significant stock in the film-based choices made by any kind of committee — be it an awards group, critics circle, soup kitchen line, etc. — but the National Film Registry is a little different. Not that they’re any different than those aforementioned organization types, but because the government assemblage preserves works deemed “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.” No small potatoes.

Their latest list — created for both public awareness and the opportunity to grumble, as I’ll do in a second — has been unveiled, and the selections are none too out-of-left-field. The biggest of these 25 would have to be Forrest Gump, a choice I fully understand but completely disagree with on an opinion and moral scale. The only other true objection I can raise is toward El Mariachi, film school-level junk from a director whose finest works are the direct result of working with those more talented. »

‘The Muppets’ – honors both the fans and the legacy

The Muppets

Directed by James Bobin

Written by Jason Segal and Nicholas Stoller, based on characters created by Jim Henson

imdb USA 2011

The central difficulty with reviving a beloved franchise like The Muppets is that what you gain in brand recognition, you lose in the established fan-base’s resistance to change. Keeping the older fans happy while pleasing new fans is a tricky tightrope to walk. The Muppets one big advantage over a franchise like Star Trek is that it is something that today’s parents loved as kids and that they are really looking forward to introducing to their children. That was certainly the case at the preview screening that I attended.

The Muppets come to theatres boasting the best marketing of any film this year. The clever, parody Muppet movie trailers have excited long-time fans of the Muppets and created new fans. At the same time, older fans »

The pair have recorded a rendition of Babes In Arms musical classic 'The Lady Is A Tramp' for the album, which will be released on September 20. Mickey Rooney Talks The Fox and the Hound

15 August 2011 5:18 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

In the mid-1920's, an up-and-coming young animator had a brief encounter with an up-and-coming child star. Although they only met in passing, Mickey Rooney remembers Walt Disney as "a very charming man." More than 50 years later, in 1981, Rooney would find himself starring in one of Walt Disney Studios' most beloved animated films, The Fox and the Hound. Rooney voiced the character of Tod, an orphaned fox cub who forms an unlikely friendship with Copper, a coonhound voiced by Kurt Russell. The film also stars Pearl Bailey, Pat Buttram and Jack Albertson. The Fox and the Hound and its sequel The Fox and the Hound 2 was released in a 30th Anniversary 2-Movie Collection on August 9, 2011.

Although he is quick to deny it, Mickey Rooney is the definition of a Hollywood legend. With a career that spans nine decades, he has defied the odds in an industry that often typecasts performers. »

Hallelujah! A Judy Garland Retrospective

31 July 2011 9:50 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

The Lincoln Center and the Paley Center here in NYC have joined forces to celebrate the all-singing all-dancing legend that is Judy Garland

Shout 'Hallelujah', c'mon get happy!"

Once upon a time she was dubbed "The World's Greatest Entertainer." Few celebrities have ever earned their PR self-mythologizing titles the way Judy G did. There's just no beating her for musical pleasure and cathartic heartbreak. And as if her sensational singing and dancing weren't enough, she was a fine actress, too!

I missed the first week of the celebration being in Michigan but I'll see what I can catch for the remainder of the summer program which ends August 9th. If you're not in New York City, you can always follow along at home as best you can with an impromptu DVD festival.

Still to come in the festival are...

Mickey Rooney: I Was Abused

3 March 2011 10:56 AM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Washington — Actor Mickey Rooney told Congress on Wednesday that he was left powerless by a family member who took and misused his money.

"I felt trapped, scared, used and frustrated," Rooney told a special Senate committee considering legislation to curb abuses of senior citizens. "But above all, when a man feels helpless, it's terrible."

The 90-year-old film and television star told lawmakers that elder abuse comes in various forms, including physical and emotional. In his case, he described the abuse as financial.

In his testimony, Rooney did not identify the family member he contends abused him. But he has obtained a restraining order from a judge in Los Angeles keeping his stepson, Chris Aber, away from him until an April 5 court hearing.

Rooney has accused Aber in court filings of withholding food and medicine and meddling in his personal finances. Attempts by The Associated Press to find a working phone »

Mickey Rooney Says Stepson Abusive, Withholds Food & Medicine

16 February 2011 4:19 AM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Los Angeles — A judge has granted Mickey Rooney a temporary restraining order from his stepson, who is accused in court filings of withholding food and medicine from the 90-year-old veteran actor and meddling in his personal finances.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Reva Goetz approved the stay-away order on Monday after attorneys for Rooney sought protection for the Academy Award-nominated actor, claiming he lives in fear of stepson Chris Aber.

The order requires Aber to stay 100 yards away from Rooney and his home and to refrain from contacting the actor until a hearing on Feb. 24, when the restraining order may be extended.

"Chris is verbally abusive toward Mickey," the court filing states. "He yells and screams at Mickey. He threatens, intimidates, bullies, and harasses Mickey.

"Mickey is effectively a prisoner in his own home," the filing states.

It accuses Aber of forcing Rooney to make certain personal appearances, and has »

Glee s02e12 review: “Silly Love Songs”

9 February 2011 11:58 PM, PST | Shadowlocked | See recent Shadowlocked news »

Imagine a scenario where you get your ass kicked - a really undeserving, random, vicious asskicking - and while you’re on the ground, sobbing, spitting out teeth, wondering what exactly happened, the three guys that beat the shit out of you leave you a cupcake on the sidewalk in your blurred field of vision and walk away without any explanation. That’s what being a Glee fan is like for me.

I suppose one of the reasons I piss so much on Glee’s concepts of popularity arithmetic is partially because when (and maybe where) I was in high school, no one gave even the slightest squirtlet of shit as to what was going on in athletics. The most popular guy in my school didn’t play a single second of sports and, to the best of my recollection, the only club he was in was drama club. It »
