France in 1830 is controlled by a king that every one hates. He loves his brother very much. Every one resents his brother. commandant Deburea , played by Gustav Grundgens, an actor of the theater hates him personally too. He's in love with the Countess Heloise Cambouilly, played by Sybille Schmitz, that the king is in love with too. I think Theo Legins plays her husband who don't seem to care, I think. Bad put down songs are created and spread against the kings brother in pamphlets from the actor to the theater audience as well as the public. The king resents this.well having an affair with the countess and doing stage performance back and forth.Deburea puts the kings brother down on the stage and the kings gets mad and has him arrested and executed but in the end every one loves the put down. It couldn't have a happy ending Gobels would not have allowed it. This would be equivalent to expressing criticism against the furor. but the filmmaker got away with the populace in the film loving the song. Theo Legin either plays a non caring husband or a brother of the countess cause some times he impersonates the actor for Deburea as a favor. This is almost a German version of that french Arletty classic" Children of paradise",.Theo is a lot better when he's working with fellow actor Hans Moser it seems than on his own.Gustav Grundgens is a almost bald head actor and wears a wig. You can say he's the Richard Wattis of German cinema.Sybille Schmitz plays a frustrated bored countess. Hilda Hildabrahnt shows up as a fake Countess in this film a good movie. Corrections 4/9/09. Theo Ligens did play Sybille Schmitt ,in name only, husband. The citizens overthrow the monarchy and free comedian Devereu. At least it looks that way .
