Trivia

Joan Crawford improvised several lines which made it into the final film. These were mostly autobiographical, including the line which mirrors Crawford's own life pre-stardom: "I couldn't go to school much. I was too busy doing shirts in the laundry, and when I finally landed that job in the chorus, it was too late for school." See more »

Quotes

Henry Linden: [Referring to Maggie] Hannah, isn't she all I said?

A surprising '30's potboiler
24 June 2002 | by (San Francisco) – See all my reviews

This movie is far more interesting than it should be, thanks to the very articulate discussions of feelings or the lack thereof. Good acting by Joan Crawford, who is no favorite of mine and Margaret Sullivan, who is and Hattie McDaniel who always seems to bring some needed reality to any situation with an intelligence not exceeded by anyone in the film. Fay Bainter is good at playing with her claws out.
