A good deal of the pre-Production Code Betty Boop cartoons are daring and creative, with content that makes one amazed at what's gotten away with. While the later Betty Boop cartoons made after the Code was enforced are still watchable and exceptionally well-made, they are so toned down that they feel bland.
Fleischer were responsible for some brilliant cartoons, some of them still among my favourites. Their visual style was often stunning and some of the most imaginative and ahead of its time in animation. The character of Betty Boop, one of their most famous and prolific characters, may not be for all tastes and sadly not as popular now, but her sex appeal was quite daring for the time and to me there is an adorable sensual charm about her.
Lost thought to be lost, 'Buzzy Boop' is actually available to watch though the quality isn't the best. There are other Betty Boop cartoons with crisper picture quality and clearer sound. As a Betty Boop cartoon in general, 'Buzzy Boop' is neither among the best or worst, instead around mid-tier.
The animation is still good, being beautifully drawn, crisply shaded and meticulous in detail. The music is infectious, lush and dynamic. There are some amusing moments and it is cute without being too saccharine. The voice is reliably good, even with Mae Questel not voicing Betty Boop Kate Wright does an above serviceable job and as Buzzy.
Can definitely understand why Buzzy may be annoying and bratty to some, to me though she really livened things up when needed and has much more energy and a personality in 'Buzzy Boop' than Betty. She is not one of Betty's best supporting characters, like frequent recurring characters like Pudgy and especially Grampy but she is significantly less irritating than Little Jimmy and Junior.
It is disappointing however that Betty herself has very little to do, screen-time wise and in writing, and has lost what made her so memorable as a character, she is very uptight and very bland (for Betty Boop these are pretty unrecognisable traits).
The story is quite weak and as has been said for a number of post-Production Code Betty Boop cartoons the Betty Boop cartoons worked much better when with a surreal, risqué and creative edge, and (this is talking about the later cartoons in general rather than this in particular) when the humour was more consistent and didn't try too hard to be cute.
Summing up, mid-tier and just above average if not great later Betty Boop cartoon. There's better post-Production Code Betty Boop cartoons, as well as Betty Boop cartoons overall, and there's also been worse on both counts. 6/10 Bethany Cox
