Unlike when I saw her in that Walt Disney picture and Hi Diddl Diddle, she does not over act in this film. She is a competent actress and a good singer. It's more like a Stella Dallas type story gone dark. She plays Mado a successful night club singer in world war 1 england.A composer name Jauck ,played by Albert Schoenenhals, sells his new song to her, Tango Notturno. It becomes a success. they fall in love and get married and have a child name Charlie. Perfect? no Captain Lincoln Trent, played by Hans Zesch Ballot. Has been in love with her before the war ended and still is.After the tragedy , in the beginning , when she is now a prostitute I think there's an implication that shes been murdered. The hotel proprietor Annie calls the police. Joch and Trent are called in for questioning along with every one else who was involved with her. Then it unfolds. Its when Trent calls her up because he's still in love with her that she has to leave her child, even though she has someone to watch him, to tell him that it's impossible that the poor son , Charlie ,is calling for his Mommy that he get's killed accidentally slipping the staircase. By the time she comes home he's dead and the husband kicks her out . Later on he finds her in the streets and wants to forgive her and start over again but commissar is still in love with her too.So she ends up killing her self . These are the kind of story's that made Pola Negi a success. but by the talking era people were getting wary of her . She moved to France and Goebbels and Hitler being fans wanted to help her start over again. In desperation she took it. but age factor her films weren't very successful. Zara Leander was taking her place as the new tragedienne. but she was a good actress and singer. I got this NTSC DVD form Clara bow page. They offer fair public domain prints. they had a 2 for one sale. these are ancestored prints but they are watchable Correction as of 04/16/09 It wasn't commissar Trent who was Mado love It was Lincoln and it wasn't the commissar who showed up at the hotel it was smith .She killed herself because she was ashamed of doing prostitution
