poor fare

This film was shown as part of the current Carol Reed centenary at the NFT.He not only directed but co wrote this thriller. It is based on the surmise that Ricardo Cortez is such a good mimic that he can impersonate a complete stranger by listening to him talk for just a couple of minutes. The villain Basil Sydney uses this to pull of a killing in the city. This leads to the suicide of his guardian. He tries to put the blame on Ricardo Cortez. However when his murder attempt goes wrong he commits suicide. It sounds daft and believe me it is.It just gets worse as it goes on.One unbelievable scene leads to another one. However the climax is predictable.Apparently the cast and crew had to go to France to use a new dubbing system.By the way Moore Marriott and Margaret Rutherford can both be seen briefly.
