Tower – Review

18 January 2017 9:41 PM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

One of 2016’s best documentaries is another look at a seminal moment in America’s struggle with crime and violence. Like many previous docs, it’s an examination of a mass murder. Now basic cable TV channels (and network “newsmagazines”) are filled with such, now almost commonplace, events. What makes this film unique is the subject, namely the very first mass shooting just over fifty years ago. The other aspect that makes this work is special is its approach and use of a high-tech upgrade of a movie device that dates back over 90 years. This enables the film makers to expertly transport us to that hot summer day in 1966, as a madman spewed death from the top of a college Tower.

Director Keith Maitland, like many documentarians, makes use of archival news footage and radio recordings to convey the horror of Charles Whitman’s rampage at the University of Texas. »

Learning About Winnie the Pooh on His National Holiday

18 January 2017 12:37 PM, PST | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

A.A. Milne’s beloved children’s creation Winnie the Pooh is celebrated every year on Jan. 18, Milne’s birthday.

The children’s icon got its start via a black bear named Winnie (apparently the former mascot of the Winnipeg regiment of the Canadian army, hence the name, according to the New York Public Library) living at the London Zoo during World War I. Milne’s coincidentally named son, Christopher Robin, visited the animal often and named his own stuffed bear after the real Winnie — and, oddly enough, a swan named Pooh.

Disney has its fair share of detractors, but few of them would point to the animation studio’s craft when criticizing the occasional sameness of its fairy tales and princess stories. Video essayist Jorge Luengo Ruiz has put together a six-minute video highlighting some of the best shots from more than 40 animated Disney offerings, from “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” all the way to last year’s “Moana.” Both the video and a list of the featured movies are below. One thing we all look forward to every year is our birthday, and we here at Cineplex like to celebrate the birthdays of movies too!

In 2017, there are tons of memorable films that are hitting milestone ages. While it makes us feel a little old, it also gives us a reason to look back on some of our favourite films and have epic movie marathons (oftentimes, ones where we know all of the lines).

We did some research and compiled a master list of all of the notable films that are celebrating big anniversaries this year. Among the crop are films like Titanic, Blade Runner, The Graduate, and more.

Check out the best movie anniversaries of 2017 below and start planning your movie-themed parties accordingly! »
