Second Rate Newspaper Story

John Lodge plays a reporter who is one of what is known as the Murder Gang.As soon as a murder occurs he and journalists from other papers descend on the town where the homicide occurred and prey like vultures on the surrounding populace in order to feed their editors the scraps of information.Lodge professes to dislike his occpation but nevertheless participates in it fully. He goes to the wife of one of the suspects and manages to extort love letters out of her in return for legal assistance. He witholds evidence from the police. In fact he does everything you would expect a journalist to do even today. So he comes over as a pretty unsympathetic character. In a Warners crime film he would be played by Pat O Brien, here he is played by the rather insipid John Lodge. Not surprising then that this has long been forgotten.

And sleepiness too...

Warning: Spoilers
An acceptable UK mystery yarn, that tells us the story of a female maid who is murdered, in a countryside little town. The investigation begins, lead by a journalist investigator. Nothing special in this film, lots of talk, typically British, but which tends to make like US features. I felt some bore during the viewing of this movie. Brian Desmond Hurst - the director - gave us good other products, historical stuff, and adventures too, such as SIMBA, BLACK TENTS and DANGEROUS EXILE, the one I prefer from him, with ON THE NIGHT OF THE FIRE, starring Ralph Richardson.

But it's a rare item which deserves to be seen by movie buffs.
