Great classic film musical
27 November 2012 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Great classic film musical when Austria was still a democracy. The focus is about an Austrian devil, played by Eugene Guenther, who makes a bet with Austrian angels, Fortuna, played by Lotte Kotch and Amorosa played by Maria Holst, that he can corrupt three innocent men with money.Heinz Ruhmann plays a independent tailor, name Thread, that gets fired by his boss, played by Karl Forest, for being interested in his daughter,in which he sings the song,"Li Li Li Li Love," to his bosses daughter, cause he flirts with the women customers.Even back in 1936 in Austrian films, historical films were never really that accurate. It take place in the 1870's but the women are wearing 1870 hairdos 1936 style.Hans Holt plays Glue an Independent Carpenter, who quits his job, cause he loves his bosses daughter Pepi, played by Hilde Krahl, but her father has engaged her to Strudl played by Fritz Imhoff, against her will. Paul Horbinger, I won't mention that over exposed classic he was in,plays an alcoholic tramp name Knieriem, who fears that an asteroid is going hit earth,as an excuse not to work and bum off of everyone. All three meet at the cross roads and decide to stick together, with a tuneful song," Wozu Ist Die Strasse Da. It's after that they all have the same dream of the same lottery number, I think 7359,As they sleep in a drink hall. When they all wake up ,they quickly raise up money for this lottery ticket. They all win. This is when Lupi the demon of Austria does the tempting. He persuades Twine,Ruhmann, to take the trip to Paris.so he ends up meeting a gold digger Signorina Palpiti, played by Alice Brandt, who ends up draining all his money with the help of count Von Monte Cristo, played by Anton Pointner. Glu does get tempted with by Satan ,of Austria,But he ignores him and goes back to the village to rescues his girl from a fate worse then death,a fat husband. Knieriem still thinks the world is coming to an end so he drinks heavily and invites other journey men with him, eventually opening up a bar , giving his drink away and looking at the stars with telescope to see when the asteroid is going to come He almost falls for the waitress. But the devil side track him and he loses his money. They all meet back at the same bar with Glu a success and offers Twine a business as a tailor and Knieriem as a shoe maker. Glue puts a bet either except the drink or money and a factory. Knei prefers a drink. He ends being a hobo again with the devil, of Austria.Actress Edith Wolff plays Paula, Twines second and true love interest .An entertaining Austrian classic .11/27/12
