Lives Up to Its Powerful Reputation
28 April 2015 | by See all my reviews

One of the most powerful films ever made, this movie is finally available on DVD. It's good to report that it fully lives up to its enormous underground reputation – even if the climax does come across as a little too pat for comfort and Eric Linden seems a little too weak for the role of the steadfast hero. All the other players are excellent, particularly Cecilia Parker (borrowed from M-G-M for this one – the best of her sixty movies), Clara Blandick and Roger Imhof (as the Adamses) and Henry Kolker (as our hero's dad). Produced on a remarkably generous budget by Poverty Row standards, the movie was the opening shot of fledgling studio, Grand National, who obviously regarded it as a prestige production. Unfortunately, audiences thought otherwise, and the movie lost money. It was re-titled "Sins of Children" (sic) but that didn't catch the public's attention either. Available on a very good Alpha DVD.
