The last film of Matheson Lang
25 June 2017 | by (london) – See all my reviews

It is difficult to find out much about this actor after this his last of 32 films.Mind you it could be that the indifference of the material caused him to call it day.Although set in 16th century Italy,it is by any other name a quota quickie.Lang plays the cardinal of the title. He is trying to oppose the Pope raising an army at the expense of building St Peter's.However he has a powerful opponent in the General. The General fancies a young Jane Duprez. She detests him and loves a very young Eric Portman. Her father won't let the General marry his daughter,so the General stabs him and blames Portman for the killing. He then uses the confession to tell Lang that he is the murderer.Lang then reigns madness as a device to get The General to confess his crime in front of witnesses.I suppose today it would be called a psychological thriller. It is though a touch dull.
