Storyline

Barbara Radziwillówna, the daughter of the noble house of Radziwill, accidentally meets the future Polish king Zygmunt August under embarrassing circumstances. She introduces herself as a member of a forester's family, whereas the heir to the Polish throne describes himself as a squire serving the king. Their passionate love affair leads to a secret marriage which is revealed shortly before Zygmunt's coronation. However, the queen mother is furious at this turn of events as she has always planned a truly royal spouse for her son. Members of the parliament refuse to sanction the marriage, but the king's plea for recognition of his bride eventually breaks down all opposition. But the queen mother reverts to Borgia-like tactics to get rid of the unwanted daughter-in-law and the tragedy pursues. Written by Les Adams <longhorn1939@suddenlink.net>

A romantic tragedy from Poland.

Press sheet plot outline: Jadwiga Smosarska, the daughter of the noble house of Radziwill, meets Witold Zacharewicz under embarrassing circumstances, so she introduces herself as a member of a forester's family, while Zacharewicz, heir to the Polish throne, introduces himself as a squire in the service of the king.

Their romance rapidly leads to a secret marriage which is revealed shortly before his coronation as king. Leokadja Pancewicz, the queen mother, is furious at this turn of events as she had planned for a marriage with the royal French family. There is a reactionary movement by members of the house of parliament who refuse to sanction the marriage, but Zacharewicz's plea for recognition of his bride breaks down all opposition except that of his mother. Jadwiga dies under strange circumstances nine days after the coronation, with the queen mother reverting to Borgia-tactics to get rid of an unwanted daughter-in-law and queen.

Shown at NYC's Belmont Theatre in December of 1937 with Polish dialogue and English sub-titles.
