Storyline

An investigator is asking Mrs. Gubbins about a William Foster, who was a friend of her stepson Jimmy. Both are listed as killed in action during the Great War. It is Armistice Day, 1918, and the war is over. Who should be strolling down the street but Jimmy Gubbins, Bill 'Jones' and another man who has lost his memory. They are ghosts as the official records list them as dead and not as escaped P.O.W's. Jimmy's mother is not happy to see that Jimmy is still living as she has been spending the death benefits, but she is happy to see Bill as there is a large reward for him. No one knows much about the third one, called 'Spoofy', except that he can steal anything at anytime and that gets everyone is trouble. Written by Tony Fontana <tony.fontana@spacebbs.com>

Trivia

The film actually started filming on 6 November 1935, but was halted on 8 November 1935 for script revisions. MGM then decided to scrap what had already been filmed and replaced cast members Ann Loring (who had the romantic lead), 'Una O'Connor', Charles Butterworth, May Robson and David Thursby. The setting was also changed from a contemporay one to World War I. See more »

Cute little film
6 April 2006 | by (Memphis) – See all my reviews

I haven't seen the other versions of this but the story is a simple one. Three war buddies escape a German POW camp at the very end of WW1 and arrive home just in time for the Armistice. To get backpay they have to prove that they are really alive. One of them is an American who appears to be wanted by US law enforcement. The other is his buddy with a thieving conniving money grubbing mom. The third doesn't remember who he is, but he is very good at taking things. He is constantly picking things up which leads to a very big heist, including child kidnapping.

Like I said, overall cute, and well worth a small waste of time seeing a movie made just before WW2. I'd like to see the other two versions some day so I can comment on them. But not so much that I want to take the trouble to find them. If they show up on TCM then all's the better.
