They made their debut as a dance team in Flying Down To Rio (1933), billed below stars Dolores Del Rio, Gene Raymond and Raul Roulien but soaring above them with careers that flew into the stratosphere. They headline the frothy The Gay Divorcee (1934), the film that introduced the songs "The Continental" (which launches the film into a 17-minute dance number) and Cole Porter's masterpiece "Night and Day." Roberta (1935), an adaptation of the 1933 Broadway hit, co-stars Irene Dunne and Randolph Scott. Astaire is a psychiatrist and Rogers a wedding-phobic patient in Carefree (1938), with an Irving Berlin score including "Change Partners." And they made their final appearance together for 10 years in The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle (1939), the musical biographical drama about the real-life King and Queen of the Ballroom that co-stars Edna May Oliver and Walter Brennan. (1935) The third Astaire/Rogers film is an adaptation of the 1933 Broadway hit that sends football hero Astaire to Paris to fall in love with Contessa Rogers. Irene Dunne and Randolph Scott co-star and the Jerome Kern score includes the song "I Won’t Dance," but of course he does... like no one else can.
