Sports reporter James Dunn tries to avoid being corrupted by racketeer Alan Dinehart
31 May 2016 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"The Payoff" (1935) is listed as a noir by critic John Grant, which was reason enough for me it check it out. In addition, the director was Robert Florey. I found that the story is indeed a noir. It doesn't look like a noir photographically, however. I guess that makes it a proto-noir.

The story is a good one and quite involved for a picture that's just a little over an hour long. James Dunn is a reporter whose wife, Claire Dodd, is self-centered and vain. She's got expensive tastes. Dunn's hooked on her and she stays with him as long as he has the money. He gets a promotion to sports writer, but this exposes him to the wiles of a racketeer (Alan Dinehart) who fixes sports contests. A better woman is at Dunn's elbow at the paper (Patricia Ellis), but he's oblivious. Instead Dodd becomes more and more of a femme fatale as the story darkens and Dunn's troubles multiply.
