The episode of "The Twilight Zone" called "Once Upon a Time" is one of the show's attempts at comedy and, by most viewers' gauges, didn't really work. "Once Upon a Time" starred the silent film superstar and immortal filmmaker Buster Keaton as a sad sack janitor named Woodrow Mulligan living in a small middle-American town called Harmony in 1890. Mulligan hates the fancy-pants modern inventions like bicycles and resents that livestock roam the street. The 1890 sequences were filmed in the style of a silent movie with no dialogue, plinking piano music, and intertitles. Mulligan works for a mad scientist who has invented a time-travel helmet that can bring its wearer into the year 1961, but only for 30 minutes. Mulligan, desperate to see his hometown grown up, gives it a shot.
In the year 1961, now filmed with sound, Mulligan meets Rollo (Stanley Adams) a scientist who feels nostalgia for a simpler time, a...

“Double W. C. Fields”
By Raymond Benson
Kino Lorber has been releasing the W. C. Fields catalog in high definition, upgraded from previous releases on DVD, and two more have come to the fore—You’re Telling Me! and Man on the Flying Trapeze, two titles that don’t immediately come to mind when one thinks of top tier, classic Fields pictures, but never fear—they’re hilarious and worth a look.
You’re Telling Me! preceded The Old Fashioned Way and the brilliant It’s a Gift (both previously reviewed here at Cinema Retro), all three of which appeared in 1934, while Fields (real name—William Claude Dukenfield) still had a working contract with Paramount Pictures. Man on the Flying Trapeze was released in 1935, a return to a “Fields comedy” after the actor took a sidetrack sojourn, courtesy of Paramount, into more high-brow fare.

The Bank Dick
Blu ray
Kino Lorber
1934, 1940 / 71, 68, 72 minutes / 1.33:1
Starring W.C. Fields, Judith Allen, Kathleen Howard, Franklin Pangborn
Directed by William Beaudine, Norman McLeod, Edward Cline
W.C. Fields divided the country into factions—con men and those who would be conned. Throughout his career the comedian played both parts, the hustler and the rube, but America loves its rogues— it’s his card shark persona that decorates theater lobbies and postage stamps to this day. For such a divisive figure his audience was diverse—for better or worse, ticket buyers of all shapes and sizes saw something of themselves in dreamers and frauds like The Great McGonigle, Harold Bisonette, and Egbert Sousé, three of The Great Man’s most memorable incarnations. Thanks to a flurry of new Blu rays from Kino Lorber, those bigger-than-life characters are back and still tilting at windmills in The Old Fashioned Way,...

Religion may be the opiate of the masses but nostalgia runs it a close second. And there’s no narcotic more soothing or transportive than the depression era adventures of Our Gang, a band of pint-sized comedians set loose in the wilds of Culver City. The new release from ClassicFlix, The Little Rascals, Vol. 2, raises the curtain on the gang’s golden age; still topping the bill were Jackie Cooper, Allen Hoskins as Farina, Norman Chaney as Chubby, and Bobby Hutchins as the knee-high Wheezer. "Wtf Value"
By Raymond Benson
Only serious film history aficionados and perhaps viewers of Turner Classic Movies will be aware that there was once a live-action version of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland adapted by Hollywood in the early pre-code years. It was released in 1933 by Paramount and directed by Norman Z. McLeod, the guy who had helmed the Marx Brothers’ comedies Monkey Business (1931) and Horse Feathers (1932). McLeod would go on to make such titles as It’s a Gift (1934), Topper (1937), The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (1947), and The Paleface (1948).
The production of Alice in 1933 boasts a screenplay by none other than heavyweights Joseph L. Mankiewicz and William Cameron Menzies, the man behind Things to Come and a production designer whose hands were all over Hollywood and British productions over the next two decades. The script also borrows heavily from the popular and then-current stage production written by Eva La Gallienne and Florida Friebus,...

Well, that didn't work out as planned.
That statement certainly covers all storylines on Timeless Season 1 Episode 13, as well-made plans all went splat.
First, Flynn's little time-delayed bomb finally went off.
Flynn gave Wyatt the name of his wife Jessica's killer on Timeless Season 1 Episode 12.
So naturally, Wyatt's idea was to go back in history to prevent Jessica's murder from happening.
His solution was to prevent the killer, Wes Gilliam, from being born by keeping his parents from having the necessary one-night stand.
That's because Rufus correctly insisted that no one gets hurt during this mission, which would have to be a first.
Wyatt mounted a charm offensive on Claire, while Rufus served as his wingman, distracting Claire's friend and Gilliam's future dad, Joel, all the while geeking out on '80s TV (who doesn't miss the A-Team?) and video games.
Not that he was terribly adept at distractions: A...

Dancing with the Stars pro Karina Smirnoff is blogging about her experience on the reality dance competition's 22nd season exclusively for People.com. Follow Smirnoff and her partner Doug Flutie on Twitter!Being in the bottom is never easy - especially at the first elimination show - but I have to admit, it barely even registered that Doug and I were in danger of going home last week. In rehearsal earlier that day, they had only called out two couples as being in the bottom. So Doug and I assumed there were only going to be two couples in jeopardy on the live show.

Back home in Los Angeles, we've had a year of extreme drought -- my lawn is looking patriotically ratty -- and we're expecting something called El Niño, that's supposed to be just shy of Old-Testament build-me-an-ark intensity. We withstood heat waves like those in Day the Earth Caught Fire, and now we'll get the storms part. This has been a wild year for DVD Savant, which is still a little unsettled. Gwen Stefani likes to keep an air of mystery about herself! The singer covers the March issue of Fashion magazine, where she opens up about her sexuality and shares some advice for fellow entertainers. While the 45-year-old feels incredibly confidant with who she is, Stefani admits that she's never been comfortable with her sexuality. "We have this sexual side to us that is alluring and powerful. It's a gift. When you discover it when you are around 14, it feels amazing," she tells the mag. "But you learn it's fleeting. Sexuality is something I've never felt comfortable with." And because of that discomfort, "The Voice" coach also says you won't be seeing her in any Kim Kardashian-type photo spreads! "I won't be doing any topless photo shoots anytime soon. It's not my thing," she explains. "I don't judge people for it, but I didn't even wear high heels until I...

Just as sex scandals are pretty much as old as politics themselves, as long as we've had films, we've had cinematic depictions of sex scandals, usually serious and sometimes comedic. Whether filmmakers have had to be coy about the nature of the scandals -- see "The Best Man" or "Advise and Consent" -- or whether filmmakers have been able to directly tear sex scandals from the headlines -- see "Primary Colors" -- the ground has been fertile. Fortunately -- Unfortunately? -- sex scandals just keep coming along and we keep lapping them up, from Eliot Spitzer to John Edwards to Anthony Weiner. Bringing the genre to Sundance this year was "Zipper," a largely straight-faced approach to a plausibly finger-on-the-pulse topic, which falls flat because of a middle act in which the drama spirals into dated addiction craziness. When it's a political thriller, "Zipper" is respectably acted and presented and has some merit.

Bette Midler was on "The Tonight Show" with Jimmy Fallon Wednesday night -- and The Divine Miss M is still looking good (divine!) at 68. She talked about her new album, which is a tribute to all the girl groups she loves. Jimmy said he loves girl groups too, and Bette sang a little bit of TLC. In the second video, Bette told Jimmy she'd really like to interview herself. So they did ... a Lip Flip! Halfway through the video, they started singing "Baby It's You" by The Shirelles, and it was as bizarre as you'd imagine. She's a good lip-flipper, though.

Jeffrey Tambor has been to the comedy mountaintop twice with "The Larry Sanders Show" and "Arrested Development," and has had a long and productive career that's seen him working pretty much non-stop since 1979. So he knows from professional fulfillment. But he's never had a role as challenging, or as potentially rewarding, as his current job on "Transparent," the new Amazon dramedy that will premiere on Friday morning. (Amazon will make all 10 episodes of the first season available at once.) As Maura Pfefferman, a transgender woman known to her family and the world at large as Mort, Tambor has to play another gender — even in scenes set in the past where we get glimpses of Maura peeking out from under Mort's clothes — and do the kind of small, precise dramatic work that he's rarely been called upon to do in his career, let alone as the lead of a show. Robin Williams was one of Christopher Reeve's dearest friends.
Christopher Reeve's family remembers Robin Williams as one of their dad's closest friends. Christopher and Robin were college roommates and classmates at Julliard in 1973. Their friendship spanned decades until Christopher's death in 2004.
In a statement, the family writes,
"The Reeve family, like many, will remember Robin for the humor, energy and brightness he brought into our lives through the screen. We will cherish him, though, for the quiet and unwavering support he showed our family through the hardest times. The world knew Robin as a comedic titan, but to our family, he was simply one of our Dad's dearest friends. From the moment they were classmates at Juilliard, their friendship transformed into a brotherhood that was built on a mutual admiration for the theater, the arts and, most importantly, laughter."

To the world, Robin Williams will be remembered for the manic humor and emotional characters he portrayed onscreen. But to the family of Christopher Reeve, the actor and comedian will be remembered for the "simple, steadfast friendship" he unwaveringly offered for decades. Williams, who died of an apparent suicide Monday at 63, befriended Reeve, who died in 2004 at 52, when the two were aspiring actors and roommates at Juilliard in the early '70s. The friendship endured as they found fame, and their bond only grew stronger after Reeve's 1995 horse-riding accident rendered him quadriplegic. Award-winning actor renowned for her work on Broadway and roles in classic films such as East of Eden and The Haunting
Unable to make sufficient money from her novels, the great American writer Carson McCullers took advice from Tennessee Williams and allowed one of her masterpieces to be adapted for the theatre. For four years, J. August Richards played Charles Gunn, Angel's ass-kicking right-hand man. And while Angel, the show, has been off the air for eight years, every day still feels like the show's heyday thanks to omnipresent repeats and The Whedonverse's super passionate fans.

I loved "Ruh Roh" and I feel Aidan just took me by the shoulders and said "Run!" because I need to save myself from the possible disappointment that there may not be a fourth season of Being Human.
I don't like networks messing with my mind and although there were numerous cliffhangers here and a lot to work with next year, there was also a feeling of peace among Aidan, Josh and Sally that left me feeling a little bereft.
So, we'll just carry on and chat about the show as always! Soldiering on, as they say.
We picked up right where "Always a Bridesmaid, Never Alive" ended - and if we were expecting Liam to have some enormous reason for stalking the newlyweds to the cabin, we were wrong. He went to tell Josh and Nora the werewolf blood was a curse and not a cure for the vampire virus.

Opportunities were almost lost on "The Song."
Veronica hired Derek to direct a one night extravaganza to showcase her as more than just a Broadway star and she almost missed it; while Jimmy and Kyle were presented with an extraordinary chance to work with Derek and nearly threw it away over a bruised ego.
Derek as the savior is disconcerting, but as Ivy said, "He's a genius." All three of them chose to work with him because he could help them in their careers, but he's a beast. He claws and claws until he gets through and gets his way without any consideration for others.
It's a gift and flaw all wrapped together in one. In an uncharacteristic move, Derek gave into Ronnie's fear to grow as an artist and satisfied her mother's demand that Ronnie not change. His motivations for acquiescing were complicated because ultimately he was screwed either way.

This retro light switch cover turns any standard switch in your home into an awesome arcade stick and with buttons that make classic “Pew Pew” arcade sounds when they're pressed. It can also double as a gaming-themed nightlight to keep the boogeyman away.

I raise my shield and get ready to fight this new kind of foe,...
