A Hal Roach type style Comedy classic from Germany
I don't think Hans Stienhoff ever saw any of the Hal Roach series shorts with Thelma Todd or Patsy Kelly or Laurel n Hardy Or the boyfriend series. As I have looked up about these short and they never came to Germany, until way after the war.How did they know Hal Roaches slap stick style? This is the kind of film Roach would have produced as a feature or featurette in the 1940, by Hal, in the U. S. A. Hitler just became chancellor. Things were beginning to become worse.Goebels was organizing the Ministry of Propaganda. The actress, who was the lead, were Rosy Barsony. She was Jewish. She had to get a special permit to do films in Germany, which would run out in 1935. She would stay in her home Budapest during the duration of the war. This movie has a lot of slap stick and puns , Hal Roach style that is.She's a secretary for an import business . Her boss, played by Max Gulstorf. Has entrusted her with his money to put in the bank to give to an investment of an inventor. But happen after she's had look at a dress in the window and had a n argument with one of the window lookers, she ends up late to the bank closing. She almost looses all the money when the slap stick begins. The wind blow it.Fortunatley most of the German citizens pick up her money and give it to her. She run back to her job only to find that her boss has gone home. She runs to her bosses home and his butler informs her that he's at a hotel. So she takes a train to the city where the hotel are.She ask the clerk if her boss has shown up. discovering that he's not going to show up until the next day. Lack of money she decides to sneak in one of the rooms to sleep. The inventor that her boss ,played by George Alexander , show up at the hotel with his fiancé, played by Hilda Hildabran in a laura La Plante type hairdo. To meet his boss. Wolf Retty shows up later, as Bobby Brant ,how Hal Roachian you can get? It turns out that Hilda is suspicious of George fooling around behind her back. He's black mailer photographer, Wolf. She wants to catch him. Well, it seems that as soon as he goes into the bedroom , He ends up at the same room waking her up and being surprised at being in his room.Wolf shows up at the room and catches them both. This is when the slap stick begins. She has to get that photo. The scene where she tries to get the photo in the room failing and being mistaken by the bosses wife, played by Kathe Haak, as being a maid giving her dress to her to clean. Trying to get the photo from Wolf at the hotel restaurant. Theo Ligens showing up as an alleged hotel cop then being busted by the the real detective of the hotel. Her boss calling the police to have her arrested for stealing his money, allegedly. later on catching Rosy with her dress and demanding it back. Kathe going down to the hotel restaurant as Oscar Sima, who plays the cop, who was bald back in that earlier year, follows her thinking she's the secretary and she ends up in jail. It all turns out that the invention that George Alexander has created , with the help of his mechanic, was an electronic puppet doll , life size.Actually a sneaky form of an early sex doll. This is what Hilda has been suspicious about. The laughs get funnier when Hilda get's wolf to steal the battery of the doll so that her ex fiancé show will be ruined . Rosy pretends to be the doll singing and dancing on the stage. This is very much of a Hal Roach style cause Rosy ends up with George. This is a mismatch rather then the young handsome wolf, who end up with Hilda. Only Roach would have done that. Well, Steinhoffs next project would be the flop Hitlers Youth quest. Gobeles did not like it . He stated that entertainment was the best propaganda. Uncle Otto would Be Steinhoffs more subtle propaganda feature. Excellent comedy classic from a time that was getting worse. This movie should have been titled,"The secretary and the Doll".
