The failure of the producer to properly register and copyright this film, resulted in it falling into public domain, meaning that virtually anyone could duplicate and sell a VHS/DVD copy of the film. Therefore, many of the versions of this film available on the market are either severely (and usually badly) edited and/or of extremely poor quality, having been duped from second- or third-generation (or more) copies of the film.

Three years after its first film appearance in The Hollywood Revue of 1929, the song Singin' in the Rain is played and referred by Jimmy Durante. Although the characters imply the song was famous at the time, it wasn't until 1952 when Gene Kelly performed it in the film of the same name and gave it its worldwide fame that continues to this day.
