This one absolutely sparkles
16 March 2014 | by (New York, NY) – See all my reviews

A fresh, sassy, very pre-Code comedy from a stage success, this lark stars Adolphe Menjou as a fortysomething wealthy playboy who makes the mistake of wooing and wedding young, Harlow-like Joan Marsh, spurred on by her calculating, fortune-seeking older sister, Minna Gombell. All the while his private secretary, Irene Purcell, is in love with him but too proud to admit it. The dialog absolutely sparkles, as does the physical comedy, as does the supporting cast, including a sensational Alan Dinehart as Menjou's business partner and Don Alvarado as a hot-to-trot rumba teacher. It's refreshingly cynical and unsentimental, and one of the fastest-moving early Fox talkies I've ever seen. And it's never shown. I don't know how you'll ever get to see it, but don't miss it if you get a chance.
