Russia's Gosfilmofond plans Cannes alternative

Russia’s National Film Foundation Gosfilmofond is planning an alternative international film festival to be staged in Nice during next year’s Cannes Film Festival.

Speaking to Russian daily newspaper Izvestiya, Gosfilmofond’s general director Nikolay Borodachev said that the new event - tentatively called Alternativa – would show films that had been turned down by the programmers from Cannes, Berlin and Venice.

A particular focus would be placed on films by directors from the Brics countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), he said.

“It will be an international festival with an international jury, and present awards. We will invite leading film critics. We have all of the possibilities to do this,” he said, pointing out that this festival would attract journalists attending the nearby Cannes festival as well as cinema-goers from Nice.

YouTube Reports 45% More Advertisers Used TrueView Ads In 2014

YouTube introduced its skippable video ad format, TrueView, five years ago on April 8, 2010. In celebration of this milestone, Google’s online video site has compiled a variety of data points surrounding TrueView ads, including the fact that the number of advertisers using this format grew 45% in 2014.

In a company blog post, YouTube noted that brands who have gotten more creative with their video ads over the years have seen some impressive results on the online video platform. YouTube cites a Pixability stat which found that the top 100 brands are earning 42% more views on average per month on Google’s online video site. Additionally, YouTube found all of these brands ran TrueView ads in 2014.

Google’s online video site also put together a list of the top five trending video ads from when TrueView launched in 2010. Old Spice landed on the list twice, with the #2 spot for the classic “The Man »

FilMart: Korea’s Lotte Lines Up Slate of Period Movies

Seoul — Four period titles head the sales slate of Lotte Entertainment, South Korea’s second largest vertically integrated film conglomerate, going in to next week’s Hong Kong FilMart.

Nostalgic trips down memory lane were big hits in Korea last year, with “Ode to My Father,” “Roaring Currents” and Lotte’s “The Pirates” all doing huge box office business.

Seoul during the Japanese imperial period is the setting for “The Silenced,” a thriller set in a mysterious sanatorium. Directed by Lee Hae-young (“Like a Virgin”), the picture stars Park Bo-young (“A Werewolf Boy”) and Uhm Ji-won (“Hope”). It is set for release in Korea in June.
