Chanson réaliste.
ulicknormanowen3 April 2023
Damia was a famous chanteuse , now outstripped in her country -and everywhere- by Edith Piaf in the field of what the French call "chanson réaliste".

The movie is itself a filmed chanson realiste of sorts , it's actually almost a musical ,for the second part includes plenty of them, including one by the great actress Marguerite Moreno ("si j'avais écouté ma mère" =had I listened to me mom?).

Damia portrays a singer, ruined by the death of her lover ;she winds up in Singapore (in the cheap settings of the studio ) where two men fell for her ;one of them has a fiancée who is not prepared to accept it;the other one 's passion will turn into amour fou.

The recording subject is interesting : the beginning lets us in a recording session in the thirties , then the making of the record ....which in the end will perpetuate the singer's voice.
