In order to change her own "over-refined" accent into that of a low class girl, Renoir made Marese imitate Maurice Chevalier.

This was famously remade in America (in a somewhat bowdlerized form) as "Scarlet Street", directed by Fritz Lang; in the late 1960s, a third eminent director, Jean-Pierre Melville, said that he, too, would like to remake the story, but in a tougher, harsher version than either of the two previous ones. He never made the film, however.
