Novellos style doesn't suit the screen
20 September 2012 | by (london) – See all my reviews

Novello plays a composer of popular music. For some reason he is singled out as a potential classical composer so he abandons popular music.Hr meets and quickly marries Benita Hume despite the fact that she is loved by his best friend, wealthy Cyril Richard.Novello is going blind. He manages to finish off a classical piece then submits it for a newspaper contest with a first prize of 2000 pounds.Novello looses his sight. He is fooled by Richards into believing that he has won the contest. However when he turns on the radio to listen to it being broadcast he realises that he has been fooled and he hasn't won.He throws Richard and Hume out of his flat.He has an operation which restores his sight. He goes back to writing popular music. The publishers decide to hold its debut in the Queens Hall as a syncopated symphony. It is a great success.Novello is reunited with his wife and Richard leaves them to enjoy their success. It is little surprise that Novello only made 6 films after the coming of sound. His theatrical style is just not suited to the medium and he is not a leading man type.He is far away from the romantic leading men of Hollywood let alone this country. All the conventions of this sort of story are followed.
