Storyline

Ellen Bradford comes to the south sea island of Tonga to marry her fiancée and finds out he is a drunk. She also finds out that she is the only white woman on the island and, as such, has three men taking a deep interest in her. She has written off her fiancée, and has learned real quick like that "Dutch Mike" Lutze is not to be trusted in any way. That leaves Jim Thorne, the only man who has ever bested Lutze in anything and, while Jim is an adventurer and pirate-at-heart, he knows how to be a gentleman, especially to the only white woman in town or on the island. Lutze is offended. They play poker for a plantation, Ellen, and all the pearls in the Pacific. Loser gets Poppi. Lutz has a marked deck of cards. Written by Les Adams <longhorn1939@suddenlink.net>

Fun Little "B" Picture, Hear Kenneth Harlan Sing!
29 November 2003 | by (Florida) – See all my reviews

I enjoyed this film, basically because I got to hear its three stars talk for the first time. I had only seen their silent pictures, so this was a treat. Kenneth Harlan sings two choruses in this film, and Marceline Day had the most gorgeous voice; why wasn't she used more in talkies? Gladden James sounded just like I thought he would.

The plot is predictable: cultured girl comes to a south sea island to marry her fiancee, but he has become a drunk, so she falls for a local sailor who rescues her from the hard life on the island. But it has some funny bits and some nice romantic chemistry between Ken and Marceline, so definitely not a waste of time. Too short though; they could have filled out the plot more.
