The MacFarlane Kids Are the Reason to See This Short
kidboots27 February 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Pathe in their weird wisdom thought this would be a terrific short to expand into a feature western featuring the band of Abe Lyman (of course!!). Mona Ray and the MacFarlane Brothers were the only ones to make it over to the feature, along the way Tom Tyler (apparently his first talkie), Marcia Manning and Bobby Dunn were replaced by Tom Keene, Sally Starr and Lee Moran respectively in the feature "Pardon My Gun".

"Half Pint Polly" is just the basic story without the musical interludes. Starts off exactly the same with a gag about cleaning a horses' teeth!! Ray (who was a comedienne in the Winnie Lightner mold) is peppy Polly who arrives in a pony and trap and bringing her pet monkey with her. She causes some excitement but not as much as the relay horse race between ranch hand Tom and a villainous neighbour who is also after Manning. Polly overhears a plot to keep Tom out of the race by holding him prisoner in an abandoned hut but the dopey crooks are no match for half pint Polly and her tactics which include a lasso and a big hunk of wood.

Best thing in the short are the terrific MacFarlane kids with their brilliant displays of roping, riding and horsemanship.

Not Half Bad

Although Tom Tyler is the nominal lead in this early RKO sound short, the real star is Mona Ray, the eponymous Polly of the movie. She shows up and with the MacFarlane brothers, does some nice trick shooting and roping, then ride to the rescue of Tyler, who's been kidnapped to prevent him from winning a jumping race upon which a lot of money has been wagered.

Apparently this was expanded into a feature, mostly by replacing everyone but Miss Ray and the MacFarlanes and putting in a few musical numbers. I'd like to see it some day.

Although the impetus of this movie is largely to show off little people qua little people, and so is not liked on kindly these days, it should be pointed out that they are the actual heroes of the movie.
