Eagels second talkie and last film among the "lost."

Author: Arne Andersen (aandersen@landmarkcollege.org) from Putney, VT
28 June 2001

Bette Davis followed in Jeanne Eagels' footsteps, remaking her two sound films, THE LETTER and JEALOUSY, into successful vehicles for herself (the latter was renamed DECEPTION). Fredric March and Ms. Eagels appeared together in this film which is now among the lost. One still I have seen with the two leads emoting terror to some unknown adversary reveals her painfully thin arms - she was to die that same year, a victim of drug addiction. Her performance in THE LETTER - an extraordinary one and justly Oscar-nominated (she should have won)- remains our only sound document of her career.
