A Date with Clara Bow
wes-connors13 January 2012
Struggling New York cabaret dancer Clara Bow (as Gladys O'Brien) tries to help insurance salesman Neil Hamilton (as James Gordon) by accepting an invitation to party with playboy millionaire Harrison Ford (as Turner). Only a few minutes of this film survive, unfortunately. They include some of Ms. Bow dancing in a chorus, and portions of the climactic "party scene" with her masculine co-stars. Though predictable and formulaic, the latter fragment shows Bow offering an especially appealing characterization. In fact, this smaller film, in which less footage survives, looks more entertaining that the more highly touted "Red Hair" (1928). Portions of both "lost" Bow films can be seen on the excellent "Fragments: Surviving Pieces of Lost Films" (2011) presented by "Flicker Alley" and "Turner Classic Movies" (TCM).
