A Tragic Loss
13 August 2016 | by (Canada) – See all my reviews

It is my ambition to add as many silent film synopsis of films that have a survival status of unknown or presumed lost. I try to do as much research as I can and it is not my intention to deceive anyone, for sometimes the film does exist. I am more than delighted if someone has knowledge of a film listed as lost but survives, as I wish all silent films did survive. I hope the reader enjoys this brief synopsis.

Rose-Marie ( Joan Crawford ), belle of a Canadian trading post, loves Jim Kenyon ( James Murray ), an outlaw trapper wanted for murder by Northwest Mountie Sergeant Malone ( House Peters ). To save Kenyon from being exposed by her father, Rose Marie marries Étienne Duray ( Creighton Hale ), a Frenchman of means. Kenyon rescues Rose-Marie and Étienne (badly injured) when their canoe capsizes in the river and takes them to a nearby cabin. Malone arrives, still on Kenyon's trail, followed by Black Bastien ( Gibson Gowland ), Malone's escaped prisoner--another suspect, who murdered an Indian and a town constable. The situation is resolved when Kenyon stabs the evil Black Bastien to prevent him from attacking Rose-Marie, and Étienne dies of a broken back, leaving Rose-Marie and Kenyon to their happiness.

This 1928 silent drama was based from the operetta Rose-Marie by Otto Harbach and Oscar Hammerstein II, produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, starring Joan Crawford, James Murray and House Peters. Joan Crawford later remarked, "Rose Marie was surprisingly good without the music, but I felt uneasy as a French Canadian, but the critics didn't notice.". Tragically, this 1928 silent version of Rose-Marie now remains lost.
