A real treat.
I have seen many dozen of the early Felix the Cat cartoons and because I am missing a few, I am glad I got the new DVD from Alpha Video and the collection of John Carpenter, as it featured several shorts I haven't been able to find elsewhere.
Like so many cartoons made in the late 1920s, this one was originally a silent cartoon. But with the success of Disney's "Steamboat Willie" (1928), studios began to realize that sound was the future for animation. But they already had cartoons made which were silent...so to please audiences, they later added music and sound effects to these silent films...and often the only version now available is the partial sound ones. This is the case for "The Oily Bird"...a Felix the Cat short which was originally a silent.
The film features some very clever and surreal gags...the sort of stuff that made Felix cartoons the best of the 1920s. I could describe the weird gags but it's best you just see them for yourself as Felix plays detective to catch the culprit.
This is one of the better Felix cartoons due to the gags and style of the picture. Sadly, into the 1930s, the Felix cartoons became blander and lacked the weird touches that made viewing this one such a treat
In this cartoon, Felix is sleeping in his house at night when an annoying bird breaks in and makes a nuisance of himself....turning the lights off and on and eating the homeowner's jewelry!! Will Felix awaken and stop this awful bird or will Felix's owner toss him out for doing such a lousy job watching the place?
