User Reviews

Cinematography outstanding in tight close-up combos.
12 February 2002 | by (Putney, VT) – See all my reviews

Dupont made only 37 films including the masterwork, VARIETY. This almost forgotten film is one of six with the same title which include the most recent extravaganza with Nicole Kidman and the classic Technicolor Toulouse-Lautrec visual feast with Jose Ferrer. This late silent film has a lush symphonic score and sound effects. It is an odd and tightly directed tale of a singer/dancer at the Moulin Rouge, who meets her daughter's fiance, only to have him fall obsessively in love with her and she with him. Alienation, betrayal and near tragedy result. Olga Tschechowa, unknown to me before this film, made 122 films stretching from 1917 to 1974. Although first reminding me facially of Jack Lemmon in SOME LIKE IT HOT, she proved herself a tense dramatic actress here.

The star is really the cinematography and the use of tight close-ups, both singly and in combinations of the three leads - this is quite outstanding for a British film of this period. Eve Gray who plays the daughter is rather long in the tooth for the role, looking every bit as old as Ms. Tschechowa, and so seems miscast.

When it is over, we remember the riveting stares of Tschechowa and the composition of the cinematography. Worth a look.
