Baron Reiner ( John Gilbert ), a charming though unscrupulous Viennese aristocrat, becomes infatuated with Virginia ( Eva von Berne ), an innocent schoolgirl who is engaged to his best friend, Manfred ( Ralph Forbes ). In order to seduce the girl, Reiner finances an oceanographic expedition for Manfred that takes him away for months. Reiner intercepts all of Manfred's letters and eventually bends Virginia to his satanic will. Manfred returns and wounds Reiner in a duel. Reiner recovers and takes the young girl for his own.
This 1928 silent drama was based on the novel The Masks of Erwin Reiner by Jacob Wasserman, produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, starring John Gilbert in one of his last silent films. The Masks of the Devil had synchronized music and sound effects, and tragically remains a lost film.
