Storyline

Gangsters John Finchley and James Kent operate a speakeasy in New York called "The Hawk's Nest", and Dan Daugherty is the owner of a rival nightclub that also caters to Chinatwon tourists. Daugherty frames Kent and the latter is sent to prison for the murder of a graft-taking politician. Daugherty is also upset with Finchley for protecting a dancer, Madelon Arden, whom Daugherty has a thing for, so matters are getting a bit dicey between these two underworld bosses. They don't improve any when Madelon and Finchley become real good friends. Finchley is working hard on pinning the murder of the politician on the real murderer, which he knows is Daugherty, but he has to enlist the aid of the leader of a Chinese-Tong, Sojin, to get it done. The Hawk's Nest (1928) - Lost Film
9 April 2016 | by (Canada) – See all my reviews

Determined to find the murderer of Barney McGuire ( Stuart Holmes ), one of his employees, "The Hawk," ( Milton Sills ) owner of a Chinatown café, has plastic surgery on his scarred face and masquerades as John Finchley, a Chicago gangster. He thus hopes to save the life of James Kent ( Mitchell Lewis ), manager of his café, who is being framed on a murder charge. The Hawk gains the confidence of Dan Daugherty ( Montagu Love ), owner of a rival café, whom he suspects to be the murderer, and Madelon Arden ( Doris Kenyon ), a dancer in Daugherty's café. When he fails to prove Daugherty's guilt, the council of Chinatown, aware that Daugherty also caused the death of Ching Ling Fu, a Chinatown leader, forces Daugherty to confess to the other killing. The Hawk finds romantic interest in Madelon.

This 1928 drama was produced by First National Pictures, starring Milton Sills, Montagu Love and Doris Kenyon. The Hawk's Nest was the first of director Benjamin Christensen's four mystery comedies. Tragically this 80 minute film now remains lost.
