BANCROFT has the town on edge again. Bancroft on both sides of the law---as a cop and a culprit. If you are one of those who thought "Underworld" just about the last word in crook melodramas, don't let this one catch you napping. (original print ad - exactly as worded)
This 1928 silent crime/drama was produced by the Paramount Famous Lasky Corporation and sadly remains a lost film. The only information I could find on this film for the reader is this very brief synopsis.
Hardboiled detective Two-Gun Nolan ( George Bancroft ) resigns from the force, a broken man, when he shoots his partner, Shakespeare ( Leslie Fenton ) , during a battle with a gang of hijackers whose leader, Dapper Frank Trent ( William Powell ), Nolan was attempting to capture. "The Magpie " ( Evelyn Brent ), Trent's correspondent, informs Nolan that Trent killed Shakespeare, thus raising Nolan from his alcoholic depression. Trent shoots The Magpie, Nolan kills Trent, then returns to the force and marries The Magpie after she recovers.
