Goudal striking beauty in bleak film, 22 April 2002

This is a very bleak, slow moving film, similar in plot to Murnau's later CITY GIRL. A sheep farmer brings his new wife to his father's ranch and the old man takes an instant dislike to her, proceeding to make her life miserable and even alienate her husband against her. A stranger wanders onto the ranch and sets his sites for the new wife.

The direction here is very slow and deliberate - this combined with the dark subject matter and dry, dusty settings make for pretty hard movie watching. About the only thing of value here is the beauty of Jetta Goudal who only made 18 films, most of them silent before retiring from the screen. Facially, she is most reminscent of Jeanne Eagels - indeed she could almost be her double. She does quite well with the role which has very limited opportunities for expression. Her last scenes are her best where she nobly walks away from it all.

Worth seeing only for Goudal.
