Cannes rolls out red carpet for classic cinema section

28 April 2004 | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

PARIS -- This year's Festival de Cannes will introduce Cannes Classics, a new section showcasing classic cinema, organizers said Tuesday. The section will formally group films primarily screened at the Salle Bunuel on the fifth floor of the Palais des Festivals and in Cannes' Licorne theater or at the Cinema de la Plage (Cinema on the Beach). Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni will present the world premiere of his short film Lo Sguardo di Michelangelo (The Gaze of Michelangelo) and the restored version of his 1966 classic Blowup. Cannes Classics also will feature a digital restoration of Clyde Bruckman's 1927 classic The General, starring Buster Keaton, to celebrate the release this year of a collection of Keaton's films by France's MK2 and film companies Eclair and Lobster Films. The screening May 22 -- the penultimate day of the festival -- will be accompanied by music written and taped by Japanese composer Joe Hisaishi, who also will be conducting the Cannes Symphonic Orchestra. »
