Cheating Cheaters (1927) Lost Silent
3 January 2017 | by (Canada) – See all my reviews

Important note: This is not a film review. I hope to be able to find and add as many silent film synopsis of films that have a survival status of unknown or presumed lost. I try to do as much research as I can and it is not my intention to deceive anyone, for sometimes the film does exist and some presumed lost films are still being discovered. I am more than delighted if someone has knowledge of a film listed as lost but survives, as I wish all silent films did survive. I hope the reader enjoys this brief synopsis.

Nan Carey ( Betty Compson ), a shoplifter, is caught by the police but acquitted through the influence of Lazare ( Lucien Littlefield ), a crooked lawyer, who places her with a gang of crooks. Posing as the Brockton family, they move to a seaside home, where they plan to steal the jewel collection of the Palmers, their neighbours. Nan wins the confidence of the family by flirting with Tom ( Kenneth Harlan ), who becomes infatuated and wants to go away with her, but she refuses him. Tom is caught red-handed in the Brockton mansion attempting to steal their jewels while Nan is making a success of the Palmer robbery. Tom attempts to rescue Nan from detectives, and they are both arrested along with the gangs. When it is revealed that Nan is actually an undercover agent, she induces them to return the stolen jewels and places them under strict parole; she is then united with Tom.

This 1927 silent was based on a 1916 Broadway play of the same name by Max Marcin, produced by the Universal Pictures Corporation, starring Betty Compson and Kenneth Harlan. The survival status of Cheating Cheaters (1927) is listed in the American Silent Feature Film Database as; No holdings located in archives.
