And His Noisy Big Gun

Author: boblipton from New York City
25 April 2010

This late silent Billy Bevan short will surprise you if you think of his vehicles vehicles as either effects-laden pieces like SUPER-HOOPER-DYNE LIZZIES or two-man comedies like his work with Andy Clyde. This is more of an ensemble piece as amorous dance instructor Billy goes after a private pupil; and, with his wife hot on his tail -- so to speak -- he cuts into a poker game and boasts of his latest conquest to the woman's husband.

Everyone gets to show off in this piece, but kudos to Vernon Dent as the husband. A man relegated to the supporting role in hundreds of shorts, particularly for the Three Stooges, he manages to keep the time before we see the gun and he starts shooting interesting through some fine comedy playing and the usual fine Sennett editing by William Hornbeck. A very pleasant variation on the usual Sennett farce.
