Lost Chaney-Seastrom 2nd collaborative effort, 23 June 2004
Author: zpzjones from East Coast, U.S.A.

Nope I haven't seen "Tower of Lies" and I don't believe nobody today has. For it is a lost film. This is Lon's last film of 1925. A busy year for him having made "Phantom of the Opera", "Unholy Three" & "The Monster". All considered classics today. Recounting,... Chaney & Victor Seastrom had scored magnificently in MGM's first released production "He Who Gets Slapped" in 1924. Now the studio sought to re-unite Chaney & Seastrom and reached for an even higher brow story based on a book written by novelist Selma Lagerloff. Both Seastrom & Lagerloff hailed from Sweden and the story 'seems' to be about such albeit with an American Dutch/Quaker look to it judging by some of the surviving stills with Chaney's 'old man' make up. Norma Shearer, from "He Who Gets Slapped", returns to co-star with Chaney as his daughter but John Gilbert is absent as he had scored big in "The Big Parade" and was now a huge star. Ian Keith most likely filled a role Gilbert would've played. One can only hope that a print of "Tower of Lies" shows up, perhaps in some private archives or perhaps right where it should be in the Turner/MGM storage vaults, and helps to continue completing Lon's film library. On the other hand it looks as if "TOL" will remain lost and join "London After Midnight" and "The Miracle Man" as one of Lon Chaney's sought after silents.
