18 July 2015 | by (Canada) – See all my reviews

Gaspar Le Sage (Cyril Chadwick), the Butterworth family attorney and a suitor for the hand of Eleanor Butterworth (Viola Dana), persuades a beautiful Eurasian adventuress, Annabelle Wu (Anna May Wong), to help him steal the official plans for the coastal defense of California from Eleanor's brother, Lieutenant Butterworth (William Boyd). Annabelle gets the susceptible lieutenant drunk at a roadhouse, steals his keys, and gets the plans. Blame for the theft is placed on Lord Chumley (Raymond Griffith), a British secret service agent engaged to Eleanor, who immediately sets out to clear his own name and save the family honour. He prevents young Butterworth from killing himself, recovers the documents, and saves Eleanor, who has been kidnapped, in desperation, by Le Sage.

This 1925 silent comedy/drama was Based on the play Lord Chumley by the writing team of Cecil B. De Mille and David Belasco. The film was produced by the Famous Players-Lasky Corporation and starred Cyril Chadwick, Raymond Griffith, along with Anna May Wong, Viola Dana and William Boyd.
