Tragic Loss For Silent Cinema
5 August 2015 | by (Canada) – See all my reviews

Convinced by his own brother that he has killed his fiancée's brother while drunk, Gerald Stanley ( John Gilbert ), a gentleman when sober and a beast when drunk, leaves England for Canada to avoid incrimination. There he does not drink until news arrives that his brother has married Beatrice Joyce ( Alma Francis ), his former fiancée. In his desperation, he kidnaps Elizabeth Gordon ( Norma Shearer ), a tourist, and takes her to his shack. Pursued by Elizabeth's father ( Charles Wellesley ), Gerald attempts to escape with her by canoe. Caught in rapids, the canoe overturns; Gerald saves Elizabeth from drowning and asks her forgiveness. Finally, exonerated of the murder of Beatrice's brother and saved by Elizabeth from being lynched, he faces a happy future together with her.

This 1924 silent drama was produced by the Fox Film Corporation, starring John Gilbert and Norma Shearer, before they signed with the newly formed MGM. Tragically, The Wolf Man now remains a lost silent film.
