Trivia

A Jewel Production. Universal, not owning a theater chain, devised a 3-tiered branding system to assist it in marketing its feature product to independent theater owners: Red Feather (low budget programmers), Bluebird (mainstream releases) and Jewel (prestige releases). Jewels were often marketed as special engagements in hopes of commanding higher ticket prices. This branding system remained in effect at Universal for about 15 years, ending in late 1929. Fools' Highway (1924) -- Lost Silent ?
3 July 2015 | by (Canada) – See all my reviews

This 1924 romance/drama was based on the novel My Mamie Rose; the Story of My Regeneration by Owen Frawley Kildare (New York, 1903). The film adaptation was presented by Carl Laemmle and produced and released by Universal Pictures. It starred the brilliant young actress, Mary Philbin. It now remains a lost silent and one hopes a copy does survive. For now, all I can offer the reader is this brief synopsis.

Mike Kildare (Pat O,Malley), a swaggering youth from New York City's Bowery at the turn of the century, loves Mamie Rose (Mary Philbin), a mender in a secondhand clothing shop. Mamie is fascinated by Kildare's brute strength, but she is also attracted to a kind and gentle Jewish boy. Kildare's gang, which he forsakes to prove his love to Mamie, waylays and beats Kildare in an underground den. He takes the severe punishment, reforms, wins Mamie, and joins the police force.
