Cytherea (1924) -- Tragic Loss
9 July 2015 | by (Canada) – See all my reviews

Lee Randon (Lewis Stone), weary of business duties and a conventional home life, acquires a long-lost sense of excitement and romance with young flapper Claire Morris (Betty Bouton). When he meets her married aunt, Savina Grove (Alma Rubens), she appears to be the woman he imagines whenever he gazes at a doll he has christened Cytherea, goddess of love. Breaking past ties, he and Savina begin an intense affair, and their search for a romantic paradise in Cuba leads to Savina's tragic death. Lee returns home, repents, and is reunited with his wife and children.

This 1924 silent drama was based on the novel Cytherea, Goddess of Love by Joseph Hergesheimer. Adapted for screen by talented scenario writer, Frances Marion and produced by The Samuel Goldwyn Company, with the dream sequences filmed in an early version of the Technicolor colour film process. Tragically, it now remains a lost silent film.
