Slave of Desire (1923) -- Lost Silent ?
18 July 2015 | by (Canada) – See all my reviews

This 1923 silent drama was based on the novel La peau de chagrin, roman philosophique by Honorè de Balzac (Paris, 1831). Produced by the Goldwyn Pictures Corporation, it starred George Walsh, Carmel Myers and Bessie Love. Sadly, Slave of Desire is now a lost silent and all I can offer the reader is this very brief film synopsis.

Poet Raphael Valentin ( George Walsh ) meets the vampish Russian Countess Fedora ( Carmel Myers ), who makes him successful overnight, then rejects him. An Antiquarian gives him a piece of magic leather that will grant every wish. The poet becomes rich and famous again, destroys Countess Fedora, and is about to die because he is a "slave of desire" when a girl, Pauline Gaudin ( Bessie Love he once loved but deserted saves him.
