If Winter Comes (1923) -- Lost silent
6 July 2015 | by (Canada) – See all my reviews

This 1923 melodrama was based on a novel and produced for film by the Fox Film Corporation with filming locations in Leeds Castle, Kent, England. Sadly it is now listed as a lost silent film and all I can offer the reader is this brief synopsis.

Mark Sabre ( Percy Marmont ) engages Effie Bright ( Gladys Leslie ), a girl of Tidborough, to keep his coldblooded, snobbish wife, Mabel ( Margaret Fielding ), company while he is at war. When Sabre comes home wounded, Effie, who has been dismissed, comes with her baby to ask for shelter. Mabel leaves Sabre when he takes Effie in, and he is subsequently ostracized. A scandal breaks when Effie kills her baby and commits suicide. Sabre has a nervous breakdown as a result of a coroner's examination conducted on the basis of untrue and incriminating evidence, but Sabre's former sweetheart, Nona ( Ann Forrest ), whose husband has died in the war, comes to his aid.
