Trivia

A Jewel Production. Universal, lacking its own theater chain, devised a 3-tiered branding system to assist marketing its feature product to independent theater owners: Red Feather (low-budget programmers), Bluebird (mainstream releases) and Jewel (prestige productions). Jewels were produced in hopes of drawing higher roadshow ticket prices, a tactic that would sometimes misfire. Universal ended brand identifying its features in late 1929. See more »

Abysmal Brute (1923) - Lost Silent ?
27 September 2015 | by (Canada) – See all my reviews

Reared in the California mountains by his father, an ex-prizefighter, Pat Glendon ( Reginald Denny ) shows great skill and strength but is terribly shy of women. When he finally enters competition in San Francisco, he achieves success and the title "The Abysmal Brute." One day he rescues a man from drowning, meets socialite Maude Sangster ( Mabel Julienne Scott ) as a result, and falls in love with her at first sight. He keeps her in ignorance of his profession, and though Pat is handicapped by his lack of knowledge of social niceties, they see each other often. When Maude does learn of Pat's prizefighting she repudiates him, but Pat is persistent and finally wins her from his rival.

This 1923 silent drama was based on the novel The Abysmal Brute by Jack London, produced by Universal Pictures, starring Reginald Denny and Mabel Julienne Scott. The survival status of this film is listed as unknown, sadly suggesting it may now be a lost silent.
