Half-starved and homeless, the desperate Miriam meets Geoffrey Sherwood, who is disconsolate over the loss of his sweetheart, Valentine, to another man. He helps Miriam, they fall in love, and Miriam saves Valentine (who has decided to return to Geoffrey) from the wrath of her husband. But Valentine rejoins her husband, while Miriam, thinking herself to be second in Geoffrey's affections, departs for South America but is pursued and prevented from suicide by Geoffrey.
