Storyline

Louis Racine has inherited great wealth and married famed singer Madelinette, whom he passionately loves. But Louis carries a pair of secrets: his wealth may be taken from him if a contradictory will is found, and his health is deteriorating from a disease which will slowly turn him into a grotesquely deformed figure. Terrified that the truth will come out, Louis dares anything to prevent the loss of his riches and true love... even if it means he must kill the man who might be the rightful inheritor. The Lane That Had No Turning (1922) - Lost ?
18 August 2016 | by (Canada) – See all my reviews

Important note: This is not a film review. It is my ambition to add as many silent film synopsis of films that have a survival status of unknown or presumed lost. I try to do as much research as I can and it is not my intention to deceive anyone, for sometimes the film does exist and some presumed lost films are still being discovered. I am more than delighted if someone has knowledge of a film listed as lost but survives, as I wish all silent films did survive. I hope the reader enjoys this brief synopsis.

The Seigneur of Pontiac, estranged relative of Louis Racine ( Theodore Kosloff ), dies in Paris, leaving no will but a provision that 50,000 francs be paid Madelinette ( Agnes Ayres ), Louis' wife, making possible her operatic career. Tardiff ( Frank Campeau ), former servant of the seigneur and an enemy of Louis, insinuates that there is a hidden will; however, Louis takes the title of his deceased relative and his estate. In a struggle with Tardiff, Louis' back is injured. As Madelinette prepares to make her operatic debut in Paris, George Fournel ( Mahlon Hamilton ) arrives from England with a letter from the seigneur indicating his rights to the estate. Meanwhile, following his wife's departure, Louis has an operation performed on his back, but it is unsuccessful. On returning, Madelinette is horrified by her husband's condition and decides to give up her career to care for him. She later discovers the hidden will, but it is stolen by Tardiff and taken to Fournel, who fulfills her request to burn it; in a jealous rage Louis kills Tardiff, then commits suicide. Madelinette finds happiness with Fournel and pursues her career.

This 1922 silent drama was based on the novel The Lane That Had No Turning by Gilbert Parker, produced by the Famous Players-Lasky Corporation, starring Agnes Ayres, Theodore Kosloff, Mahlon Hamilton and Frank Campeau. The survival status of The Lane That Had No Turning (1922) is listed in the American Silent Feature Film Database as; No holdings located in archives.
