Soviet editors re-cut the Dr. Mabuse films into one shorter film and titled it "Gilded Putrefaction."
The Image Entertainment DVD release of Dr. Mabuse omits several scenes. Between the Stock Market sequence and the beginning of the Folies Bergere sequence, there is a crucial scene of Dr. Mabuse giving a psychological lecture to a society. This establishes Mabuse as a bona fide doctor, and makes his criminality and cruelty all the more perverse.
The U.S. release through Janus Films divides this into two separate films: "Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler" (at 120 minutes) and "Dr. Mabuse, King of Crime" (at 93 minutes).
The complete restored version of this film is now available (June 2004) on a double DVD from Eureka in the UK. This version includes the scenes not present in the US Image Entertainment release.
